Becoming Mr. Perfect Referee
It is not a mere contention that one cannot notice the referee during the game unless he makes a bad call since it always happens - at least in most cases. Who are being cursed or hollered at in live game or in TV when a bad call is committed? Who are the target of the player’s annoyance and irritation if they deemed they are reprimanded inappropriately? Of course, no other than but the referee. This is to show how important that a referee to be well trained, educated or knowledgeable and simply – professional.
The significance of referees to a game is equivalent to the game itself since it cannot be conducted or pushed through without a referee to officiate it. Their job description hosts a much broader scope from checking the condition of the sports venue to be the mediator of players or teams in dispute. There is more work for referees from starting and stopping the games for they also keep the official time of the game clock at close. Through the course of the game, referees must unmistakably monitor possible rule violations for the sake of fairness and unbiased play. It is the referee that gives appropriate penalties if they see that a player violates rules and inadequate equipment that can mean deception and trickery that will tint the game with unfairness. And that what a referee’s job to keep the game in order and steer clear from any shadows of cheating issues and controversies.
A professional referee is the one who also calls the shot of the game as they are the one who knows he rules of the game too well. Since they are the one who determines if certain rules are violated or not, they must also possess great communication skills and advance knowledge of the sports they are officiating. This is because for the instances that they need to explain the penalties they call on players to the players themselves, to the coaches and even to the fans and viewing public. They must also communicate with their co-referees as well like in the game of basketball or football since they work in group. Unlike in a boxing match, one referee is enough to officiate it.
We might only see referees to just blow on their whistle; they do it for they really understand the game. They must be confident to their abilities to regulate the game and to make decisions. With all this responsibilities, professional referees are usually hired if they have undergone many years of training and experiences beginning from amateur stints and levels. Even if a high school diploma is enough to qualify one to become a professional referee, there are actually many referees that have bachelors and higher degrees of education in their shoulder.
Although referee is a profession, many chooses referee as only their part-time job even if it has a considerable paycheck along it. This is because sports peak only in seasons. Many opt to get job as official referees in school and universities. But to be a sport officials or referee, one must undergo an employment background check especially here in US. For the Midwestern United states for example, referees and sport officials are required by Big Ten Conference to undergo annual [an employment background check and background search. This is also in accordance with the provision that anyone who works involving educational institution to undergo such background checks.
What matters really most is that, to become an efficient referee is to be always dedicated to fairness and equality for the game to commence peacefully and orderly.
